Hi fans! Chris Butcher, Marketing Director of UDON Entertainment here. I just wanted to take a quick second to let you know about a very special release now in stores —Evangelion Chronicle: Illustrations.
The Neon Genesis Evangelion television series and theatrical films revolutionized Japanese anime with their incredible animation, sophisticated storytelling, and dynamic mecha and character designs. The revolution continues today, where new films reimagining the Evangelion story continue to top box-office charts in Japan and DVD and Blu-ray sales charts in North America. In short, Evangelion is a worldwide phenomenon, and that is why I’m so proud that UDON Entertainment is publishing the English-language edition of Evangelion Chronicle: Illustrations, the first in a series of three Evangelion Chronicle books exploring the deep mythology of the original series.
Evangelion Chronicle: Illustrations is a gorgeous, oversized (10” x 13”) artbook collecting more than 200 new illustrations created for the Evangelion Chronicle encyclopedia series, including pieces created exclusively for this volume. It also contains rough sketches, illustrator and creator commentary, and an amazing fold-out poster featuring a pretty epic battle between EVA-02 and the Evangelion Production Models... You know the one I’m talking about! The illustrations are pulled from across the epic series, including the entire 26 episode run of the original anime series, as well as the films released in English as Evangelion: Death & Rebirth and Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion.
When I first discovered the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime and manga years ago, it quickly became one of my favourite stories of all time, and I’ve watched the anime, read the manga, and poured over art books many times since. The artwork in Illustrations is stunning, and it really pops off the page. There’s something about seeing an amazing illustration of EVA-01 in high resolution printed 13” tall that transports me right back to watching the first episode again, for the first time... and it’s a great feeling.
The following two books in the Evangelion Chronicle series are Evangelion Chronicle: Side A and Evangelion Chronicle: Side B, which will be released later in 2013. Each book covers about half the original series, going into detail on the mythology of story, the characters, motivations, and secrets contained within. They’re pretty awesome books and offer great insight into the original TV series and movies. I’ll write more about them closer to their release date. I would have loved for something like Evangelion Chronicle to have been available years ago to answer my questions, and I’m thrilled I get to be part of the team releasing it into English.
